Kris Johns 0:52
We sure do we have a couple of awesome coaches to bring you in. The first one is from our friends over at Orlando vacation calm, they created an exclusive offer just for you to receive 5% off for lodging for guests when you use the coupon code does love di s L O V E at checkout. No other guests are getting this discount except for you. They have condos, pool houses in mcmansions to choose from. And they have something for everyone for families of all sizes. So from a word occation to a Disney World vacation with your family. Their properties are flexible to meet your needs. You can book online in or Lando vacation.com or calling 800-641-4008. And I think Vanessa aren't we're going to be using Orlando vacation calm here soon. Yes, we are when we go down for the 15th we're staying in one of their homes and some exciting things. They just got some new properties that are even closer to Disney. They were already right outside, but they've got some new properties that you'll definitely want to check out that are just right outside Disney property. That's awesome. So not only are they we endorsed by Orlando vacation, can we also use them ourselves. And then again, now on to our show today, we'll be joined by Morgan and Scott from flying house threads. They make awesome apparel and stickers, mostly for Disney adults. But you know big kids of any size can wear their clothes. And they are offering a 15% code does love 15Dislove one five. So for you to save go to their site, they have some awesome really kind of very cool designs, a bit of retro but a modern, in a very subtle, which is exactly very subtle. But the main thing is you're going to stand out it'll be a conversation starter, I guarantee you someone will be like, where'd you get that shirt? And you're gonna say, Morgan and Scott hooked me up at flying house threads. Yes.
Vanessa F 2:36
So before we get to them, we are going to talk about we've been looking at different over the over the last couple of years, some of our shows have looked at entertainment at the parks, we've also looked at things that you could do at Disney Springs, one place that I personally like a lot and I enjoy going there we have food that we like there. It's also a nice escape from the rest of the parks. And you kind of feel like you're in your world of your own. We're going to look at all of the different things that you can do at Fort wilderness, Kris. Awesome.
Now, I know I've stayed at the cabins there in my family has stayed there. I think though you've not stayed at Fort wilderness? I have not. Yes. So Chris has been to Fort wilderness many times. But he's not stayed there. We're not going to be talking about accommodations. Today, we're going to talk about things that you can do for entertainment. Doesn't matter where you're staying on Disney property, or outside Disney property. There's a lot of fun activities that are available there. And one of the things that I really enjoy is I've done several of these that we're going to talk about one of the activities was even part of our wedding. Do you remember that our wedding trip?
Kris Johns 3:45
Remind me
Vanessa F 3:46
What did we do? The wagon, right? Oh, yeah, yeah, so yeah, so we're gonna talk about a lot of fun things there. And these most of these, of course, are going to have an added cost. We're gonna give you give you what those costs are, as of right now, which is June 2021. There are a couple of these that are still not started back up yet. But considering most of the activities at Fort wilderness have already started back up, I would envision that the other ones will be starting again very soon.
Now we're going to talk about first off, we're gonna look at some of the more unusual activities that are available and then some things that you would think of at like a campground or a wilderness area. Now first off, they have a Segway tour. And this Segway tour is a wilderness back Trail Adventure, they call it because you're kind of doing those more heavy duty segways that go like you they go through the trails and the that are kind of through the woods at Fort wilderness. This is held six days a week and it's really supposed to be a fun experience. I know that we've looked at some of the Segway tours before there's also segway tours that are held in the world showcase. And so these are some fun things to do. So if you're interested in doing a Segway tour, and you want to check out fort wilderness,
is definitely a great way to check it out. This is one of the tours that should be starting up soon. But again, just something different that you wouldn't even even expect at Fort wilderness. Now as we go a little bit further, there's a couple of things that we're going to look at that happen at multiple places that or I'm sorry, that have multiple options that you can do. And the first one is at tri circle D ranch. So this is where the horses that work at Magic Kingdom and that that they stay. And this is kind of fun, because they have things for little kids all the way up to adults. And I've done some of these things too. Now they have one thing that you can do if you just want to go check out the history and kind of Walt's connection to horseback riding in that you can go through the barn and they have a display that has all the information about the connection of Disney with horses, you'll get a little bit of information about the horses that are on Main Street USA, the white ones that pull Cinderella's coach for the weddings. It's just kind of a fun thing to do. So if you're there, you can check it out. And if there's a cast member there, you can there's times that they'll have guided tours, which is super awesome. Now of course they have horses at the not really my thing. Yeah. Chris has a not a great relationship with horses, but I enjoy horses a lot. And there's a couple of different things that you can do there. One of them I've done my mom and I years ago did they have horseback trail rides. And that's really fun, because you get a 45 minute ride through fort wilderness. I'm gonna have to see if I can find some pictures because it's been a while. You can't take pictures on it. But you are able to get we had some pictures, I think afterwards. So that's something that in those are going on right now. The trail rides just a fun, relaxing experience, something that Chris wouldn't be going on anytime soon. But I really enjoyed it when my mother and I did it years ago. Now if you have some younger people in your group, something that they might be interested in are the pony rides. Now these pony rides are pretty cheap. They're only $8 a person. And this is just a fun thing. They're every day you can if you're a little one isn't super thrilled about getting on the pony. They'll even let you take pictures with them. Um, so just kind of a fun thing for kids. They also have petite ponies that you can see they'll stroll them around their pen. So that would be something I think kids would like, what about little? Would you little petite ponies would that be better than a horse? Big time. Okay, so maybe we'll take Chris to see the petite ponies. And I'll go on the trail right against him and our daughter can check that out. So that's something fun that you can do if you're an avid horseback rider. Or if you're a novice like myself, and you just want to try it out. It's a great way to do it. And of course, it's at Disney, which is even better. And checking out the barn is super cool, too. They just have a lot of great Disney history. So if you're into that Disney trivia. So really great things that you can do a couple other things related to horses that are temporarily halted right now. Number one, they have wagon rides, which we talked about a little bit, we had one of those as a welcome party for our wedding you can take every day they weather permitting, they have to wagon rides a night that anyone can participate in. So if you're going to eat at trails end, or if you were at the campground staying or if you went over to the campground to enjoy some of the other activities, the wagon rides the they're 25 minute rides, they're only $12 for 10 and over and $8 for three to nine. And this is fun, because it's a 25 minute ride. But it's cool because they take you on the beach where you can see like, the side of Magic Kingdom towards Space Mountain in that and I just remember, we because you can rent rent out the wagon for private rides, we had just our group on the wagon. And it was fun because you got to see Magic Kingdom in the background. And it's just kind of is so quiet compared to the hustle and bustle of other parts of Disney property. It's just a nice relaxing experience. So whether or not you go on one of those group rides, or you run out the whole wagon for yourself. We also rented out the wagon a second time, like we had a group that took the wagon ride again. It's when we met some friends. Do you remember that? I do not. So one of our first meetups that we went on with other Disney couples who were married at Disney to is where we we met when we had a series of events at meetup at Disney World. And we all the group of us went on a wagon ride. And some of our good friends we met in an ed and Shane and Charlie is on a wagon ride. Are you serious? Yes. That was the first time we met them. Yes. That trip. Wow. Yeah.
So, anyways, the wagon rides are really fun. We're hoping those should come back soon. I'm assuming probably because of the group aspect those might be a little bit later. Another thing that is also available is that Disney will do typically available Not right now, as we're still working our way into read, increasing capacity at the parks, our carriage rides, and during the so they do carriage rides over at Port Orleans, Riverside as well as at
at Fort wilderness. And they're just a fun, we haven't done them at Fort wilderness. But we did the carriage ride at Port Orleans Riverside. And that was very nice. We did that for one of our anniversaries. And I enjoyed that a lot. It was very nice. Yes. So I'm assuming the one at Fort wilderness is probably even better because it's more secluded, a little quieter. They also offer which I think this would be super fun. They have seasonal holiday sleigh rides. Now coming from Michigan, I'm not sure how a sleigh ride works in Florida. I think it's the app yet you just can't get in the mood. He does a lot of things. It's a sleigh probably on wheels. Correct. So during the holidays, hopefully maybe by this holiday season in 2021, they might have those holiday sleigh rides back up and going. So that kind of rounds out all of the different horse related activities. So from the pony rides to wagon rides, sleigh rides, they have you covered at at tri circle D. So one of the other things that you can do, and I think this would be fun. The only person I know who does this actually was my mom has done Archery in the past, they have a fort wilderness archery experience. One of my good friends loves Merida from brave. And so they talk they kind of market it as a married experience. At the bike barn, you can take part in an archery experience, and it's 75 minutes long. They teach you how to fire at the range targets. They keep it down to a limited number, they have an expert that teaches you how to do it. They work with you to hone your archery skills. So it's 75 minutes. And right now it's only $45, which to me, that's fairly reasonable. So if you're just interested in archery, or maybe you have someone in your family who loves Maratha, you might really want to give it a shot. It sounds like it's really interesting. And this is something that is already back up and running right now. So I think the archery thing might be kind of fun to learn how to do or they'll be really cool. Yeah, I think that's even something you might like. So the archery experience is something else that's available at Fort wilderness. Now we're gonna go to some of the more traditional things. One of the things that is available at some of the other resorts as well as fort wilderness is that they have boat rentals. And one thing that I think though might be exclusive to Fort wilderness is you can do kayak rentals. The kayak rentals right now are only $13. And they have canoes as well.
Kris Johns 13:02
So if you're more of a canoe person to just like Moana Yeah, that's true.
Vanessa F 13:08
Oh, they should have Moana. You need to tell them because Disney will put a character on anything if they're marketing Archery with Merida they should definitely do mohana canoes. But these are available at the bike barn. So the bike barn is towards the back at the meadow trading post. And there you can get the canoes kayaks, they also have bike rentals which are at other resorts like boardwalk at Port Orleans, Riverside, other sports equipment because they have like tennis, volleyball, basketball courts, there is really a wide range of things. And one of the nice things with whether you're doing the kayak and canoe rentals, or the bike rentals, you have a lot luxury of space. So the water there you are not in the main Bay Lake, you're often that side one. When you are doing the bike trails, there's tons of trails to be able to move around, you have much more space there than even if you're running like port Orleans, Riverside or something. So it's just kind of a fun thing to do. If you check out go to the bike barn, and here's a couple of tips for wilderness is not the easiest to get around. Would you say that? That is correct. So what we typically do is we will a lot of times go there from Magic Kingdom because you can take the boat that's going to take you right over there. It makes the stop at Wilderness Lodge and then at the campground, but if you take the boat directly from Magic Kingdom, it's going to take you right to the back where the metal trading post is and the bike barn.
If you are doing any of the experiences related to the horses, you're going to want to go to the front of Fort wilderness. So taking the boat is going to kind of make you have to
take the internal bus system up to the front if you do have your own vehicle or if you're just traveling to Fort wilderness from one of the parks or like from Disney
springs, that's going to take you right to the front, which is right by the barn area, which makes it easy to if you're doing the horseback riding or something, or if you drive there and you just park right at the front, because fort wilderness has its own bus system, because of all the different campsites, the cabin sights, all of that. So if you have to start at the front and work your way to the back, you're going to have to take the bus system, but they do have it clearly marked. You can no you can see what your I think there's like a crocket line and I forget they're named after different characters. Um, so that's something to keep in mind depending on where you're going in, in the resort. Now, last but not least, the last thing that you can do at Fort wilderness is something that's available at some of the other at the other resorts. But this one has a few added bonuses. I would say one thing that a lot of you have hopefully maybe experienced as you can do the outdoor screenings of the Disney movies at some of the resorts. We've done this a couple of times we've I don't think we've ever watched a whole movie, but we've watched parts of the movies at the outdoor movies. Yes. And those are always fun. But one of the things that's even I think even more unique that they offer at Fort wilderness and right now this has stopped because it is a character interaction is Chip and dale will lead a campfire sing along before the movie. And at our wedding. We had a group of us that walked over to check out the campfire experience. One of the fun things that is a little bit different compared to at some of the other resorts is that you have Chip and Dale and they lead a campfire sing along, and there's a cast member there who is playing guitar and she was leaving songs, a lot of just like campfire type songs. I don't know what you would describe those as exactly, I think hopefully people understand what I mean by that. And it was just kind of fun. And then the movie started afterwards. They had packages available to purchase to make s'mores around the campfire. And I don't think you walked over for that, Kris, I probably i don't think so i think it was a group of the ladies we all walked over. So that's kind of a neat thing that is unique to Fort wilderness that you don't see at some of the other movie outdoor movie nights. So hopefully that will come back soon. I'm assuming because it's a direct character encounter. It's probably why it hasn't came back. But hopefully Chip and dale will be back at Fort wilderness leading the sing along very soon. So that kind of wraps up all of the different unique entertainment, I guess you could say options when you're at Fort wilderness. And again, you don't have to be a resort guest to use these that we talked about. The a of course, still have pools and other things that would be for resort guests. But all of these different activities are something that you can go and check out on your own. We always enjoy we'll go over to eat and we've done some of the activities afterwards. So and down the road if hopefully, the dinner show opens that the whoop dee doo review opens back up down the road, it's a great chance to go a little early, check out some of these activities and then stay for dinner. But again, Fort wilderness just offer some really unique things. And I hope that you get a chance to check it out. Whether you want to break in a very busy vacation while you're there. Or if maybe you're taking a more slow paced vacation or maybe have a whole day off where you're not going to the parks for a day. Rather than spending time at your pool at your resort, head over to Fort wilderness and check some of these things out. Awesome. Yes, so we are going to get up our interview with Morgan and Scott we are really looking forward to sharing about their business and all of their unique designs. We would like to welcome Morgan and Scott to the show. Their shop flying house threads has all kinds of really unique shirts and a kind of alternative styles with subtle Disney hints. They are a husband and wife team that they love everything about Disney. But as you've probably heard Chris mention a lot just like him there. They got tired of seeing the common Disney merchandise and really wanted to create something unique. So we would like to welcome Morgan and Scott to the show.
Morgan and Scott 19:13
Thanks for having us. Hey, so happy to be here. Now of course our listeners know we always start out with an icebreaker because we want to hear what our guests have to say about their times in the park. So we would like to find out from both of you. What is your favorite ride at any of the Disney Parks?
I feel like this is such a hard
Vanessa F 19:35
there's no many good ones. I think my favorite that I'm always like super hyped to go on is Big Thunder. Right. I love Big Thunder. It's my favorite whenever we're like oh, it's called Big Thunder. There's not a big line like it's it's always a big hype, but I love all the dark rides but I definitely think there's my favorite. That's a good one. Yeah, that's a it's a tough question. For me. It's
Morgan and Scott 19:59
Well, cuz it's like, Do I go within the style check ride? You know? I mean, kind of where do you go, but I'm torn between Indiana Jones or Big Thunder
because anyone that does is is great so much that they've done with it. But I will copy out to your listeners, we haven't had a chance to go on the rise. Rise of the resistance. Right? Okay. Yeah, we haven't done that either. Yeah, but I've seen footage of it. And I feel like that will become one of my new favorite rides when we finally get a chance to go on it. For sure. Yeah, that's what we haven't gotten to ride those either. So I think that can probably change a lot of people's minds when their favorites for sure.
Vanessa F 20:42
Now, we want to hear all about your business, and what are the products that you offer connected to Disney?
Morgan and Scott 20:50
Well, currently, we offer t shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and stickers. And then within that, mainly, we started out with adult sizing, but then found that adults like the kids to have the designs as well. So we're slowly getting into children sizing as well.
Yeah, that's about it. Yeah. That's awesome. You know, and with that, really, what was the what caused you to start your business?
So I think like a lot of people during COVID, we got sort of bored. And then randomly, I drew up one of our first designs, which was the Lilo and Stitch, surf shop. Okay, design.
And then we actually just kind of made it for ourselves. And we have a bunch of Disney friends who said, Well, why don't we offer it to them. And it was a big hit with them as well. And so then, Morgan and I would kind of look at each other and said, Well, maybe there's something here, right? Because there's not a lot out there. Like our style is a little more subtle, little surfskate clients what we're into, and there's not a lot of that out there. Sure. So then we drew up a second design and threw it on and that's the store and, and kind of have been growing since then. Wow, that's great. And you are not the first shop. We've heard from so many people that were able to grow. Last year, the Disney community has been really amazing in that aspect. For sure. Yeah. Now we want to hear how do you think that your products can add Disney magic to our listeners lives?
I really hope it's kind of
an interesting question. So something that we we do periodically, is we will
donate 100% of the proceeds to a different like charitable, Oh, nice. Yeah. So like we raise money for somebody, we, who actually kind of makes a lot of our designs kind of helps us he's an artist. And his daughter was kind of having a lot of medical issues. And so she we had him create a design that was one of our pirates, shirts. And 100% of the proceeds went to help pay for her medical bills. And so we do it or do what we can to do a lot of donations for,
you know, different communities. But typically, it's always kind of Disney related, we, you know, donated to the Disney cast pantry.
Yeah, I think also, how it kind of benefits people. So if, if some of your listeners are like us, we are not huge.
Like, we love Disney, but we don't always like to wear characters and things that are very obvious to Disney, right. And sometimes people feel like they can only wear those types of shirts in the park, you know. And so with our designs, a benefit is it's more subtle. And so if you're wearing it outside, in general public, if you go to the grocery store, not everybody's going to know, it's it's amazing. So with our shirts, you can pretty much wear them all the time.
Vanessa F 23:53
Well, that's something that Kris talks about a lot is that he's not somebody that's going to wear a huge Mickey Mouse face on his shirt.
Kris Johns 24:01
I will not
really appeal to that kind of and that's what we've said that there's it's just hard to find that unique way and I think to that point, but that's you know, I have some of the more you know, subtle designs, more traditional ones, like those are the ones I you know, again, I get I wear it out every once while you get some compliments and you feel nice, but then that's one thing I love all your designs is that, you know, it's something that you it's subtle, and it's almost to a degree conduct an inside joke where it's a cool design to start, but then if you know, you know, I think that's the real cool thing about your designs.
Morgan and Scott 24:30
Yeah, we've we've actually been told that before and now whenever we do designs, that's kind of what we think but we've heard the win, you know, you know, and that's sort of what we like to do with our designs like we just like it to be for Disney adults and Disney people that really know the parks or really know movies and things that if you know you know it right now,
Vanessa F 24:51
could you tell our listeners now I personally like that you're soaring design, for instance, because like at our vow renewal, we did a ride mixin where all of our guests got
To ride soaring, so like we that ride is super special to us, but could you tell some of our listeners a little bit about some of your favorite designs you have?
Morgan and Scott 25:11
Well, the soarin' design is actually, I think one of our top favorite. That one we put a lot of effort into
just having a Soarin' concert T is something that we didn't see. And I love on the back of it got you have all the different locations that soaring around the world goes and it's kind of like your concert venues. Right? We really love that. Me personally, I just have always been kind of that surf skate kind of vibe, even though I don't serve myself, but I've just always been kind of attracted to that style. So personally, I really enjoy like, we have one out that we just came out with its Lilo and Stitch surf school. Okay, so I really enjoyed that one. Yeah, we kind of went like a 90s 90s vibe with it. Okay. So it's like, it's kind of like a TV blue with the hot pink print on it. We also offer it in like a white block where people that don't like to wear such bright colors. But right now, that's also one of my my other favorites.
Vanessa F 26:10
Now, if I were to want to order something from your shop, what's your typical turnaround time? Like if I was playing a trip or something? How early Do I need to order something from the shop?
Morgan and Scott 26:20
Yeah, so for the most part, we try to keep good inventory on hand.
So but but periodically, we also do pre sales. And when you do like a pre sale, that's typically to get a larger order in stock. And that can take a couple of weeks, because we'll like do a pre sale for, you know, five days, and then we send it off to the printer. And then once we get it back, so it can take a little bit longer. But if it's on the Etsy page, then you can typically, you know, we'll ship it out probably the next day. So you can you can get a pretty quick but when we do do a pre sale, make sure to like label that pretty clearly onto that Etsy page that can take a little bit longer. But for the most part, the turnaround time is pretty quick. Now, we've talked a lot about your shirts, but I know you mentioned you have stickers and some other things. What are some of the things that are on some of those other products?
So most of the designs that we do, we kind of have a Mickey design that's out, we put that onto a hat. Okay? We're still dabbling right now, because we are we are new or about eight months old. I mean, we literally just started making sweatshirts and T shirts, and then kind of got into stickers and are figuring everything out. We never, never done anything like this course. So it's kind of a learning curve. Sure. Yeah. So right now we're real limited. We're thinking about going to tank tops, and we're figuring out kids clothing and things. But most of the designs that you'll find on the shirt, we either have on a hat or on stickers as well. Okay, awesome. Now, if there was something that I saw on one of your shirts, it but you didn't have it like on a sweatshirt, or some of those things you're starting to talk about, is that something that people could message you about? Or just keep an eye on your Etsy shop? Yeah, of course, we love it when people reach out. Because we are so small, we do print things up in a little bit smaller quantities, because we're just unsure of how things will sell. So we do love if people either message us on on Facebook or Facebook on Instagram, you can message us on our Etsy store. And that's about that. And we've actually had a lot of people do that. And randomly, we'll have people ask me, like, I don't like black, and I have it on an olive green. And if it's kind of a one off thing, and it's a pre sale we have, we have no problem really doing that for people if they have a special request, either with sizes or certain colors or things like that. So yeah, if your listeners want something specific, please reach out and let us know. And if there's a lot of interest, then more more likely to print more things up on different materials. And
people then you know, custom orders. They have like a trip and a couple of weeks and right. You know, people have asked your custom orders. We're super happy to accommodate as long as the timing works out and everything else.
Yeah, we're we're always happy to make it work for our Disney fans. Awesome.
Kris Johns 29:18
Thank you. And I know you just mentioned where you're at. But if you could just give us maybe your handles on the different platforms again for us just for our listeners.
Morgan and Scott 29:26
Yeah, for everything. It should be flying house threads, and you can find us I think we do have a Facebook, we need to we do.
Morgan handles more of the social media stuff. But mainly we are on Instagram. We have Facebook, our Etsy store, and then a tick tock that we just created and all of them you should be able to lift up with flying house threats. Perfect. And I will make sure to put all of those links in the show notes too. So people can find you on whatever platform they are using themselves. So thank you
Kris Johns 29:59
So much, Morgan and Scott, for joining us today, we really appreciate you sharing all about your business. Awesome. Thank you for having us on. And thank you so much. And again, make sure you go and look at their designs. They're awesome. I mean, I love them. I mean, just up my alley. There was a railroad railroad at Fort wilderness. Oh, yes. It opened in 1973. When did it close?
Vanessa F 31:03
I'm thinking my family took their first trip in 83. And I think it was close by them. That is true, but Okay, so I'm going to say 1980.
Kris Johns 31:12
Close 1977. Wow, that was insane. I thought it was before we were born.
And then in 1974, an original version of the hoop dee doo musical review opened up at pioneer Hall. It was performed by what comedy? We're except you're not going okay. I'll give you it's blank. musical comedy workshop.
The all American, the American
or the national?
Vanessa F 31:41
The National? No, the all American musical comedy workshop. Oh, wow. made its debut in September 5 1974.
Very interesting. Yeah. And I was just listening to a podcast with Lou Mongello. And he was talking about Fort Wilderness and they were trying to find the trail to follow along where the train track was. Yes, that's very hard. You can't No wonder if it's been closed that long, correct? Yes. So interesting. Very interesting. Now, of course, we are going to end with our wisdom from Walt quote. And I thought we talked about
nature a lot, because we were looking at Fort wilderness. And one of the things if you've followed Walt's history and things like that, he was really into incorporating things related to nature into his films, as well as just some of the real life nature documentaries they did. And one of the things if you've ever watched like the history of Bambi, they would do use real animals to figure out how the animators were going to draw them. So I thought this was a good quote that tied into it. We can learn a lot from nature in action. And that's so true. If you take some time to pay attention and see, there's a lot that we can learn from out from out in nature. So great. Yeah, very true. Now, thank you so much for joining us on this episode of The Dislove podcast with Vanessa and Kris. I'm Vanessa and I'm Kris.
